This week marked the inauguration of the 10-week training program for the Women Run/Walk Memphis 5k. Each of us at GRT901 is involved in some kind of way, be it greeting at the door of the expo, joining in on weekly training runs, or race day volunteering. I (Jennifer) am so excited to play a small part of this. Not only are some very dear women in my life, including my mom and mother-in-law, involved in the program, but I am fortunate enough to be one of the coaches for the Intermediate 1group.
If you were to ask me if I was a teacher or a trainer, I would say definitely not. But as I listened to myself talk to my husband and friends about leading a group of women through the training program, it became very clear to me that my passion to share the control and confidence that I have gained from running is something that I want to see in other people's lives too. My desire to run waxes and wanes, usually with my mood, meaning it's basically unpredictable. But the feeling I get from taking control of my health, the disciple that comes from diligent training, and the confidence that comes from doing what I thought was impossible, these are things I can share with others. These are the thing I want to pass on.
I care a lot about empowering women. My other jobs more blatantly show that passion. Although my running can seem selfish at times, I would like to think the joy and satisfaction that is visibly evident on another runner's face when they run the furthest or fastest they ever have, is irreplaceable.
So for the next 10 weeks, I along with more than 50 other women, will run, walk, talk, and learn from each other, as we encourage and empower the other to do more than we expect is possible. Even now, the excitement in me grows at the things that will be said at the finish line of the 5k on September 7th. I'll be lost in my own excitement and pride to see each one of my fellow ladies I helped guide finish as well.
To kick things off and keep them going for the next 10 weeks, I'll share one of the best running songs on my playlist. May Beyonce motivate you as much as she shakes her money maker.
